APERITIVO IN ITALIAN
Those who have lived in Italy for a while will surely miss the evening aperitivo after returning home. So that we can now satisfy our wanderlust all over the world and prepare a perfect Italian drink, my friend Marisa Huff, who looks after the Quadri restaurant in Venice, has written a book that introduces us to Italian cocktail culture.
THE RECIPE FOR THE PERFECT APERITIVO
In “The Cocktail Culture of Italy” Marisa not only explains where the Italian tradition of meeting for a cold drink in the piazza or in your favourite bar before dinner comes from, but also tells us a lot of recipes that could help us in the future to bring a little dolce vita to northern climes. Besides the typical drinks of the different Italian regions, from Turin to Venice and Rome, “Aperitivo – The Cocktail Culture of Italy” also contains recipes for small snacks and delicacies to be served with Negroni and Americano. A must for all fans of the Italian way of life and Mediterranean cuisine! She told me one of the recipes for BOX IN A SUITCASE.
THE AMERICANO
In Italy you will hardly find two bartenders who share an opinion about how the Americano got his name. Some believe the cocktail was named in 1933 after Primo “Americano” Carnera, the first Italian to win the world heavyweight boxing championship. Others claim that the “Americano” is the drink American expads drank in Italy during Prohibition. Most likely, however, the name refers to the way an Americano is made – like the espresso of the same name, it is diluted with water and ice to suit the tastes of US citizens.
